Events to mark CERN’s 60th anniversary kick off this week, with a whole host of concerts, films, meetings, plays and lectures on offer. You can follow many of these cultural and artistic events via the live webcast service at:

At 4pm on Wednesday 17 September, a symposium entitled "60 years of CERN - 60 years of Science for Peace" will be held in the Globe of Science and Innovation at CERN. It will focus on the human achievements throughout CERN's history, and the role that the Laboratory has played in promoting international cooperation and contributing to peace.

To celebrate 60 years of the CERN Council there will be a symposium on Friday 19 September at 3pm. The CERN Council is the governing body that brings together the representatives of the Member States and sets the Organization’s policy. The acronym CERN comes from the original French name of the Council  Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire – at the time the Laboratory was founded. Music will bring the day to a close, with a concert by the United Nations Orchestra at 6.30pm.

On Saturday 20 September at 7pm, CERN will be screening a documentary about the search for the Higgs boson. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the film’s director, Mark Levinson, and editor, Walter Murch.  From 10pm CERN physicists will try their hand at comedy in the Comedy Night.

Details of all of the events being organised for CERN’s 60th anniversary can be found here.
