Since 2014, THE Port Association has been tackling over 40 humanitarian-related challenges during its flagship event, the Humanitarian Hackathon, where international experts fast-track ideas to working prototypes to be further developed or directly implemented in the field.

In this fourth edition, 60 participants, field experts and coaches will tackle the following challenges:

  • Renewable energy app for rural electrification
  • Age assessment for children
  • Waste management in refugee camps
  • Wearable for Parkinson’s development monitoring
  • Cheap sonic wobble-board for lower-limb amputees

This year’s event will also feature the exceptional participation of two external challenges:

  • Open network for secure, decentralised communication
  • Saveurs migrantes – integrating local asylum seekers by training them in cooking and selling food to the public

Cuisine Lab - an integrative initiative bringing locals, refugees and expats together – will join us and cook with us on Saturday, 7 October at IdeaSquare.

After 60 hours of hacking at IdeaSquare, the resulting prototypes will be presented – in an event open to the general public – at the Globe of Science and Innovation, from 6.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. on Sunday, 8 October.

The proposed technical innovations will receive feedback from Sascha Schmeling (CERN), Olivier Delarue (Global Humanitarian Lab), Kali Taylor (UN SDG Lab), Thierry Agagliate (Terre des Hommes) and Derek Queisser de Stockalper (Queisser & Cie).
