HiRadMat open for beam time requests

Applications now open for beam time requests at the HiRadMat facility at CERN SPS

Constructed in 2011, HiRadMat (High Radiation to Materials) is a CERN facility designed to test materials for the world’s future particle accelerators. HiRadMat provides high-intensity pulsed beams to an irradiation area where material samples, as well as accelerator component assemblies (e.g. vacuum windows, shock tests on high power targets, collimators), can be tested.

The facility receives the 440 GeV proton beam extracted from the CERN SPS with a pulse length of up to 7.2 microseconds, to a maximum pulse energy of 3.4 MJ (3*1013 proton/pulse). In addition to protons, ion beams with an energy of 173.5 GeV/nucleon and a total pulse energy of 21 kJ can be used. The beam parameters can be tuned to match the needs of each experiment.

Applications are now open for beam time requests at the HiRadMat facility for slots running from spring to the end of 2015.

Apply here until 19 September.
