This summer, the winners of the 2016 Higgs Prize, Hannah Takahashi and Calum Sharp, took part on a three-day visit to CERN.

The Higgs Prize, sponsored by the Scottish government, is awarded to the top male and female high-school students in Scotland who obtain the highest marks in their final year examinations. Now in its third year, the prize was presented by Scottish Science Minister Alasdair Allan and Nobel laureate Professor Peter Higgs and includes a trip to CERN.

This year’s winners, Hannah Takahashi from the Hillhead High School in Glasgow and Calum Sharp from St. Joseph’s Academy in Kilmarnock, attended summer student lectures, made many standard site visits, such as the superconducting magnet facility, visited locations where Scotland is particularly involved, e.g. the LHCb control room, and met various lab personalities, giving them a “fabulous insight into the workings of CERN and its people”.
