15–19 September 2025 marks a first for CERN: our very own Mobility Week! For five days, synchronised with the European Commission’s campaign to raise awareness of sustainable urban mobility, the CERN community will come together to rethink the way we commute and move around our sites.
The idea is simple: by choosing smarter, greener or healthier transport options, we not only reduce our environmental footprint, we strengthen the sense of community that makes CERN unique. And there’s a bonus: less time in traffic means more time for science and improved well-being!
A week packed with activities
From Meyrin to Prévessin, there will be something for everyone:
- Bicycle repair workshops – Give your bike some love (registration required).
- Talk – Hear directly from the Director of Geneva’s Office cantonal des transports (OCT).
- Mobility Orbit – A parade celebrating alternative mobility.
- Mobility stands – Meet CERN services, partners and retailers outside Restaurants 1, 2 and 3.
- Vacuum Day - Imagine what your life would be like without so many cars coming on site. Daily prize draws – Travel sustainably during the week and enter the draw to win one of hundreds of prizes!
Incentives to get you rolling (or riding, or sharing…)
- E-bike rentals – try out for a week one of 60 electric bikes; CERN will contribute 50 CHF towards the renting fee.
- Carpooling boost – reserved parking spaces, networking sessions and tools from Mov’ici and HéLéman.
- Try public transport – buy a TPG monthly pass; CERN covers 60% of its cost for the first 100 staff members.
- Enhanced shuttle service – more CERN buses at morning, lunch and evening peak times.
- Hitchhiking pilot – a new, community-driven way to get around and between the CERN sites.
Our partners – TPG, Donkey Republic, Genève Roule, OCT and Geovelo – will also be on site with tips and practical tools, such as cycling maps of CERN and the surrounding area.
CERN’s Smart Mobility strategy isn’t just about getting from A to B. It’s about:
- Protecting the environment, in line with CERN’s sustainability commitments.
- Building a culture of shared, efficient transport.
- Supporting the well-being of the CERN community.
Just as our experiments rely on collaboration and innovation, so too can our daily mobility. Every bike ride, shared car trip or bus ride helps CERN move forward sustainably.
