Exceptional extension of French residence permits and long-stay visas

The French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs has informed CERN that the validity of the following documents with expiry dates between 16 March and 15 June 2020 is extended by 6 months:

  • Long-stay visas (including “PROMAE” D visas)
  • Residence permits (including special residence permits)
  • Residence permit application receipts
  • Temporary residence permits.

This extension is automatic and does not require any action to be taken by the holder.

In order to assist the holders of these documents in exercising their rights and to facilitate border crossings, the French Interior Ministry has published general information in French and English, which is available online at https://www.immigration.interieur.gouv.fr/Info-ressources/Actualites/L-actu-immigration/ Information-generale-sur-la-prolongation-des-documents-de-sejour-General-information-on-the-extension-of-residency-documents.

In addition, as special residence permits that expired between 16 March and 15 June 2020 are now valid for the entire extension period, you should apply for their renewal between 8 and 6 weeks before their new expiry date (for example, a card that expired on 29 March 2020 is now valid until 29 September 2020 and its renewal should be requested in mid-August 2020).

Holders of a special residence permit that expires after 15 June 2020 must apply for its renewal according to the usual procedure, i.e. 6 weeks before its expiry at the latest (see the “French cards” section in the Admin e-guide, http://admin-eguide.web.cern.ch/en/procedure/french-cards).
