G7 Evian 2026: travel and work recommendations at CERN

Written by:

HR Department

As you may know, the G7 summit will take place in Evian from June 15 to 17, 2026. Given its immediate proximity to Switzerland, this event will have direct consequences on security, transport, and traffic in the Lake Geneva region, particularly in Geneva and along the main cross-border routes.

Internal border controls with France will be temporarily reintroduced between 10 and 19 June 2026 and from Friday June 12 to Thursday 18, crossing the border between the Canton of Geneva and France will only be permitted at seven crossing points: Anières, Moillesulaz, Thônex-Vallard, Bardonnex, Perly, Meyrin, and Ferney-Voltaire. Crossings at the Cornavin and Annemasse railway stations, as well as at Geneva Airport, will also remain permitted. These crossing points will be under continuous (24/7) supervision by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) and increased waiting times should be expected. All other crossing points will be closed to traffic, regardless of the mode of transport (including bicycles and pedestrians).

Given the increased level of controls, you are strongly advised to carry during this period:

  • an identity document (national ID card / national passport),
  • legitimation documents issued by the Host States (special residence permit, Carte de légitimation, or Attestation de fonctions),
  • CERN access card,
  • where appropriate, driving licence and the vehicle’s licence documents.

The extensive security measures put in place for this international event will have a significant impact on travel in Geneva and throughout the cross-border region. Geneva Public Transport (TPG) will maintain its service but some services may be disrupted or reduced, particularly cross-border services. Real-time information will be available on the TPG website and app, as well as via a dedicated helpline.

In this context, the authorities recommend that the public, businesses and passengers plan their journeys in advance, opt for alternatives or postpone travel where possible, and keep themselves informed via official channels.

Implications for CERN

In line with the recommendations of the authorities, CERN recommends full telework during the period of 12-18 June to be requested in the usual way (EDH), and to be authorised by your supervisor taking into account the exceptional circumstances and compatibility with the needs of the service. It is authorised during this period to exceed the maximum period of telework in accordance with the provisions of OC7. Please note that also for temporary labour and contractors exceptional telework may be allowed during this period, where possible and compatible with operations, and provided prior approval is obtained from the CERN technical responsible of the contract.

As the LHC will still be operating, and with many other activities ongoing that require on-site presence, many of you will still be needed on site. Where possible, and in accordance with the need of the service, we recommended to adapt your working hours to avoid as much as possible the expected traffic jams. Please discuss the possibilities with your supervisor. Where applicable and authorised any special working hours will be compensated or remunerated in accordance with Administrative Circular 23.

For the moment all access points will be functioning as usual and with the usual access conditions. Further information will follow if any adjustments, agreed with the authorities, will be implemented, particularly with regard to Gate E and the inter-site tunnel and with regards to the availability of shuttle services.

If you have any planned events at CERN with outside participation, or duty travel please reflect on whether it is possible to reschedule or to move to on-line. We are currently making an inventory of other impacts such as the obligatory job shadowing for high school kids that is planned for quite some pupils that week.

The services of Stakeholder Relations, Site Operations and Human Resources have regular meetings to coordinate communications and actions.  All pertinent information and any further recommendations by the authorities concerned will be sent to you as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can consult the various Web sites devoted to this event, especially:

If you have any urgent questions, please send them for the moment to Hr-Dept.Head@cern.ch and we will group them and send them to the appropriate service.
