CERN has released its strategy and main objectives for the period 2026–2030, approved by the CERN Council in June.
The strategy closely follows the priorities laid out in the 2026 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. It identifies clear aims across five strategic pillars: global leadership in accelerator science and technology; cutting-edge scientific research at the forefront of knowledge; delivering value for CERN’s stakeholders; wider societal impact; and organisational excellence.
The timely completion of the HL-LHC (machine and detectors) is CERN’s number-one
priority for the next five years. Alongside this, maintaining a vibrant programme of non-collider physics at CERN remains key. CERN’s main scientific objective in the long term is to be in a position to seek Council approval for the visionary FCC-ee project in 2028.
The CERN strategy also acknowledges the dedication of CERN’s workforce, recognising that their continued commitment to excellence remains essential to the Organization’s future.
