To be better adapted to the operational needs of CERN’s activities, and to reflect modern learning practices, the radiation protection training programme has been revised by the Safety Training Service in collaboration with HSE and specialists from other CERN departments.

What’s new?

• Key radiation protection messages for anyone working on CERN’s sites are now integrated into the Safety at CERN induction training, which has been completely overhauled. The Radiation Protection – Awareness e-learning course, now redundant, has been removed.
• The Radiation Protection – Supervised Area and Controlled Area courses have been updated to better reflect the CERN-specific content and framework and to address operational needs.
• The Radiation Protection – Controlled Area – Initial course now follows a blended-learning format, combining a short e-learning module with a practical classroom session.
• A new Radiation Protection – Radioactive Sources e-learning course has been introduced for personnel using radioactive sources. Successful completion is required in order to request a radioactive source through GESO.

The revised programme is available in the Safety / Radiation Protection (RP) catalogue on CERN’s Learning Hub. As of 1 July 2026, all new radiation protection training assignments and renewals follow the updated programme. Personnel with a currently valid qualification remain qualified until its expiry date.

In line with CERN’s commitment to continuous improvement, the programme will continue to evolve to reflect developments in CERN’s operational and safety needs. Any updates will be communicated via the usual channels.
