Launch of a new Safety training programme for supervisors

Equipping all supervisors to strengthen CERN’s Safety culture

|

This November will see the launch of a new training programme, “Safety Matters for Supervisors”. This comprehensive training course aims to enhance the integration of Safety management practices into the Organization’s general management practices and thus foster a robust Safety culture at CERN. This initiative is designed to ensure that supervisors at all levels are fully aware of their Safety roles and responsibilities and are equipped with the necessary tools and support.

The programme will cover all facets of Safety at CERN, including occupational health and safety, with a focus on well-being and psycho-social risks, environmental protection and safe operational practices. Participants will receive a comprehensive Safety awareness toolbox, designed to help them develop a strong Safety network and effective management practices, positioning them as active contributors to a sound Safety culture.

Following the success of pilot sessions held in May and June 2024, the regular sessions will commence in November, starting with four sessions per year with the possibility of adding more, if needed. The training will be delivered through a blended format, beginning with three e-learning modules covering key Safety concepts, followed by two interactive workshops that will focus on practical applications and peer-to-peer learning.

The programme is highly recommended for new supervisors in their first year of appointment. Existing supervisors across all levels in both technical and non-technical fields are also encouraged to enrol when places are available. The programme has been aligned with the HR Learning & Development Leadership learning portfolio and approved by the CERN Learning Board, reinforcing the Organization’s commitment to embedding Safety into its core management practices.

Benoît Delille, Head of the HSE unit, sums it up: “This is an excellent opportunity for supervisors to enhance their leadership capabilities and contribute to a safer work environment. We encourage all eligible supervisors to participate in this programme and to take an active role in promoting a strong Safety culture at CERN.”
