Geneva, 26 November 2013. CERN1, the City and The Republic and Canton of Geneva announce today the 2014 open competition for the Collide @ CERN Geneva artist in residency award2. The form of art for 2014 will be music, which has a special affinity with physics.
“Many physicists at CERN are also musicians, because patterns and abstraction are two qualities which are common in both disciplines,” said Director General Rolf Heuer, “So it is with particular pleasure that we welcome this new call and look forward to the results of this cross-fertilisation.”
The open call targets all creators of contemporary music, which also includes jazz, electro, acoustic and electronic music composition.
The Collide @ CERN Geneva award is a 3-month funded residency at CERN, for fundamental research and development between the arts and science. The competition is funded by The City and Canton of Geneva, and it is open to music creators who were born, live or work in Geneva.
The winning artist of the award will be given an office at the CERN Meyrin site and will be matched with a CERN scientific "inspiration partner" with whom he/she will explore new ways of understanding the worlds of music and particle physics.
“One of the hallmarks of the residency as shown by past winners like the choreographer Gilles Jobin and the film maker Jan Peters are the interventions in the laboratory,“ says Ariane Koek, CERN Cultural Specialist. “So we will be particularly looking for entries which really show a clear wish to engage with the musical talent at CERN to take us to new dimensions of creativity and interdisciplinarity.”
At the start and end of the residency period, the artist will also give a joint public lecture with his/her science inspiration partner at the Globe of Science and Innovation.
