At 11.00 a.m. on Wednesday, 1 July, the Science Gateway passed the symbolic mark of one million visitors thanks to Elna, Antoni and their 10-year-old twins, who were visiting from Barcelona. Since opening in October 2023, the Science Gateway has established itself as a beacon of science tourism. With its five exhibitions, lab workshops, science shows and iconic architecture, it attracts visitors from the local area and all corners of the globe.
This milestone comes just a few weeks after the Science Gateway received a Special Commendation from the jury of the European Museum of the Year Awards at a ceremony in Bilbao. The jury underlined that “The CERN Science Gateway fosters a passion for knowledge and discovery by inspiring future scientists, engineers and critical thinkers. In doing so, it strengthens scientific literacy and curiosity across borders, making the new science centre and museum an outstanding example of public engagement with science.”
The jury members commended, in particular, the tremendous effort that has been put into making the Science Gateway accessible and appealing to children, thanks to the many opportunities for experimentation and for interaction with scientists, whether through guides, exhibits, labs, shows or tours.

The European Museum of the Year Awards, which are bestowed each year by the European Museum Forum, are among the most prestigious accolades in Europe for this sector. Six museums received awards this year, notably for achievements in specific areas such as inclusion and sustainability, while six other museums, including the Science Gateway, received a Special Commendation.
