G7 Summit: CERN Campus Practical Information (12-18 June 2026)

Written by:

The Internal Communication team and SCE Department/Site Operations

Update on 10 June 2026

Following consultations conducted in close coordination with the Swiss and French authorities, extended opening hours and exceptional conditions for Gate E and the inter-site tunnel will apply on 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 June 2026.

Exceptional opening hours on 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 June 2026

  • Gate E: 05:30 – 22:00 (both directions – motorized vehicle, bike, pedestrian)
  • Inter-site tunnel: 05:30 – 22:00 (both directions including home <-> CERN journeys; prohibited for motorcycle, bike and pedestrian)

Over the weekend, 24/7 access to CERN campus remains possible via Gate B. The opening of Gate E and the inter-site tunnel on 13 and 14 June will be assessed and decided based on the situation. Any such extension will be announced accordingly.

Eligibility

Access via Gate E and the inter-site tunnel will only be open to:

  • Holders of a blue or red CERN badge
  • Interns
  • Accompanied minors of Members of personnel registered at Jardin des Particules or for job shadowing at CERN

Please note that controls by local authorities may take place at Gate E and at the inter-site tunnel. You are strongly advised to always carry identification documents (ID/passport, CERN access card, and other relevant documents as applicable).

During this period, the CERN shuttle service will operate according to the normal schedule; the shuttles running cross-border routes will use the inter-site tunnel. Please consult the CERN Campus App or the G7 access & service dashboard for the latest updates.

Recommendations

These exceptional measures are intended to facilitate access for those whose presence on site is required during this period. They may be adjusted depending on the context and circumstances. Due to significant disruption expected in the region, you are strongly encouraged to:

Traffic and border crossings

Please note that traffic conditions are expected to be difficult due to border controls and traffic restrictions on the A1 motorway, leading to potential traffic diversions through Pays de Gex. The closure of border crossing points will begin on Thursday, 11 June in the afternoon. For further details, please consult the border crossings map.

Macarons issued via CERN are valid from 12 June 2026 (00:01) to 18 June 2026 (23:59) and allow access to priority lanes at:

  • Bardonnex and Thônex-Vallard (24/7)
  • Chancy I, Landecy, and Monniaz, (06:00-09:30 and 15:30-19:00, both directions)

Macarons are personal, non-transferable, and must be clearly displayed. Each person in a vehicle using a priority lane must hold their own macaron.

Following a previous message on the impact of the G7 summit on CERN activities, we are sharing additional information and links to keep you informed in real time.

Access

CERN’s operational activities will continue during this period.

To reduce the risk of congestion at the border, it is recommended to limit travel to CERN as much as possible when compatible with operational needs. Telework, and adapted working hours when on-site presence is required, are recommended for members of personnel in agreement with supervisors.

CERN is in contact with the authorities of the Host States to explore possible arrangements aimed at facilitating travel for collaborators whose presence on site is required (Gate E, inter-site tunnel, badges) and for children attending the Jardin des Particules.

Any exceptions or additional measures agreed with the authorities of the Host States will be communicated immediately once confirmed.

Nevertheless, any potential arrangements do not exempt users from avoiding or anticipating travel, as major traffic disruptions are expected in the Geneva area and queues of stationary vehicles may complicate reaching Gate E and the inter-site tunnel.

During this period, please avoid parking CERN vehicles in and around Geneva. Heightened security measures and planned demonstrations may affect road access and vehicle safety. Thank you for your cooperation.

Campus Services

Most CERN Campus services remain open during this period, with some possible disruptions. For real-time information, please consult the status dashboard, which is available in English and French.
