Probing the Standard Model to 0.37 ppm with the muon anomalous magnetic moment

Where:

For the past fifty years, the Standard Model has been hugely successful in describing subatomic phenomena. However, recent measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (a_mu) appear to challenge that statement, as they show a significant discrepancy with the reference Standard Model prediction. After providing an overview of the current experimental and theoretical landscape surrounding a_mu, I will present a lattice QCD calculation of the contribution that currently limits the precision of the Standard Model's prediction for a_mu. When combined with the other Standard Model contributions, this calculation yields a prediction that differs from the experimental measurement by only 0.9 standard deviations, with an overall precision of 0.37 ppm.
