The central heating will be gradually switched off throughout CERN from Monday 28 April. This date is determined mainly by the weather and night-time temperatures, in order to rationalize our energy consumption.

The environmental and financial impact of heating is substantial. Reducing the number of days of heating on campus was one of the measures included in CERN’s Energy Savings campaign launched in 2022 and part of the ISO 50001 measures.

However, the operating schedule is not the only lever for SCE department to reduce energy consumption linked to infrastructure heating. In addition to modernising facilities, a detailed inventory of equipment is being conducted to optimise power and automation systems and adjust settings as precisely as possible.
