The Swiss Permanent Mission in Geneva would like to make staff members aware of the prohibitions and restrictions applicable to the import, export and transit of certain products or goods in Switzerland, in particular:
- certain laser pointers
- counterfeit goods
- animals and plants
- certain radio and telecommunications equipment
Checks are carried out at the border, particularly at airports but also on postal parcels, to ensure the safety of the population and the protection of the environment and the economy through these strict rules.
The types of products and goods that are prohibited or require special authorisation are listed on the website of the Federal Customs and Border Security Office (FOCBS) under the heading Prohibitions, restrictions and authorisations.
Particular attention is drawn to the fact that most laser pointers are prohibited due to the danger they pose to health, as indicated on the Swiss Mission's website. They may therefore be confiscated at customs and destroyed. Passengers in possession of such devices will be questioned by the police and may face criminal prosecution. The same applies to persons who order these laser pointers for delivery to Switzerland from abroad.
It should also be noted that even in the context of tourist traffic and for personal and used items, counterfeit brands and designs are prohibited, while certain foodstuffs, plants or animals require special authorisation.
