The Swiss authorities warn of high risks of burglary during the holiday season. Risks can be considerably reduced by taking simple preventive measures:
- Simulate your presence by using a light on a timer, for example
- Keep valuables out of sight and systematically lock doors and windows
- Inform your neighbours if you are going to be away for a long time and have your letterbox checked
- If you notice any suspicious behaviour, including that of your neighbours, call 117 immediately (in France, call 17)

The police also warn about the risk of thefts in public places. It is recommended to maintain individual vigilance and to:
- Carry personal ID/documents and other sensitive items on yourself (in inside pockets) or in secure locations;
- Remain particularly cautious in crowded and busy places;
- Avoid displaying valuable items ostentatiously.
