With the third long shutdown (LS3) fast approaching, we are entering an intense and complex phase of work. This period is crucial to prepare CERN’s accelerator complex and infrastructure for the HL-LHC era. During such times, it is easy to become focused solely on deadlines and technical challenges. However, we must remember that safety is not just a guideline at CERN; it is a fundamental principle that underpins everything we do. Whatever the challenge overcome, it will only be considered a success if work is carried out safely.
Guided by the CERN Safety Policy, the Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) unit ensures that the safe operation of our facilities remains at the forefront of our mission. As defined in CERN’s Safety Regulation SR-SO, our Organization regularly establishes Safety Objectives that extend across all safety domains to protect our installations and safeguard the health and well-being of everyone working on site.
Every day, we encounter a variety of hazards – from general risks, such as trips and falls, to more specific hazards that depend on the nature of our activities. This is why it’s important to pause, assess the situation and start an activity only when the risks involved have been duly considered and appropriate mitigation measures implemented.
To this end, the HSE unit, together with collaborating teams from other departments, is organising a dedicated CERN Safety Day on 5 June in the area around Restaurant 1. From electrical and noise risks to occupational health, biodiversity, fire safety, waste management and life-saving actions, a range of activities and demonstrations designed to raise awareness and foster good practices will be showcased at the Safety Day.
Don’t miss the opportunity to meet our experts, learn more about potential hazards and discover practical steps to prevent accidents and keep our workplace safe and healthy. Safety Day is a chance to reflect, learn and reinforce our commitment to a safe and responsible CERN.
People are CERN’s greatest asset, and safety begins with each one of us. This means:
- Being mindful of safety risks and hazards at all times
- Taking all necessary precautions before starting work, after properly assessing the potential risks to people, the environment and assets
- Following the relevant safety training to stay informed and prepared
- Equipping ourselves with the right personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Consulting and understanding the safety rules and associated documents that span diverse domains.
Each of us plays a critical role in fostering a safe working environment. Let us all be the driving force behind CERN’s safety culture.
