Germany at CERN '95

Geneva, 12 September 1995. The importance of fundamental research for the technological strength of a nation was underlined by Ministerial-dirigent Dr Hans C. Eschelbacher in his address at the inauguration of the 6th German Technology exhibition "Germany at CERN1 '95" on 12 September. Dr Eschelbacher explained; "Efficiency in science is a source of Germany's innovative ability and thus of its future. Without scientific progress, it will not be possible to master the economic, cultural, social and political challenges facing our society."

CERN's Director General, Prof. Chris Llewellyn Smith, welcoming the exhibitors, stressed the importance of Germany's contribution to the Laboratory's scientific programme. He was very pleased to see such a large number of companies representing a very wide range of leading technologies at the exhibition. Prof. Llewellyn Smith stated that CERN* Council's decision on 16 December 1994 to build the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) had been a milestone in the history of CERN. Construction of the LHC and its detectors was a major technological challenge, demanding the development of new technologies and pushing existing technology to the utmost limits. CERN, in particular the LHC project, would prove to be an important driving force for innovation in European industry.

The 45 German high-tech companies displaying their most recent range of products, illustrate German industry's ambition to play a full part in CERN's present and future scientific projects. Several have successfully taken part in technical projects at CERN and other European laboratories, developing the necessary components in close cooperation with the research centres.

At the exhibition, special emphasis is placed on the following areas :
- Electronic switches and control devices (hardware and software)
- Superconducting components
- bending magnets
- radio frequency cavities
- cooling and transmission systems for liquid Helium
- Gas liquefaction devices
- High-vacuum equipment
- Thin-film, thick-film, and surface technology, and accompanying optical and mechanical instrumentation
- High frequency technology
- Electronics for magnet power supply and steering

In addition, companies working in the fields of electricity, air conditioning, data processing and structural engineering are present, as well as a company offering services for project management and logistics. The exhibition is open until the evening of 14 September and there is an accompanying programme of lectures given by German industrial specialists.

One of the most interesting "spin-offs" from Particle Physics research is the application of accelerator and detector techniques to medicine. Two German laboratories, DESY, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron laboratory in Hamburg and GSI, Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, have special stands at the exhibition where they will explain the use of synchrotron and heavy ion radiation for medical diagnosis and treatment.
